Listening to the Peggy-o from 10/28/85. And i may be tired and drawing from the last dregs of the day's energy, but Jerry does a fine version of Peggy-o. My favorite? Prob. not, but damn, what a version. Check out the Row Jimmy a couple of songs later. Phew! ... draw me another drink woman!

I note a few AUD versions here on the Archive for this show. Anyone have any preferences as to which shines brighter?

Nazdravi.

Arbuthnot-

What a gorgeous song to highlight!

Here's a version that is sublime as the rest and maybe more so - 79-05-11 Billerica Forum, Lowell, MA. Kind of a quiet AUD recording...just turn it UP!

This was one of the VERY early shows in Brent's tenure and if you listen to the end... there was no encore because he wazn't feelin' too good. They wanted to save him for the U-MASS shows later that weekend.

Still a great show ... and I've got photos too....

Boston was caught by suprise on this one.

...is the select one of 2 versions I'm refering to.

And Jerry's voice is still "there"!

Yer so right on 'bout that. It's like a century ago during my research days, i'd read something, find a curious thread, follow it, find another thread, follow that, and on and on, and i'd come away like ... wow, never really saw/understood it that way before. And then all those seemingly disparate elements click together (oh yeah!) and you truly feel as though you'd actually learned something. It's actually a quite incredible feeling, that moment when it all comes together. You feel just, well ... i think you know what i mean.

And it's just like exploring the beast (landscape?) that is the Dead/Garcia catalogue. It's connections man, one song to the next, one show to the next, one era/decade to the next. It's exhausting at times, perhaps frustrating, but always, always, be-a-u-ti-ful! Dig?

That 10.28 is a solid version, thanks! Just about any Peggy from '85 was great. I like how on the years prior to '85 the song just seemed to get faster and faster. Then in 85 it just has that rolling, train song feel to it.

The only thing problem with the song becoming faster was that it lost some of the vocal appeal, or Jerry's intonation. A couple versions from a little bit earlier I've always liked are 4/12/83 and 9/6/83. Listen to the Wise recording on 4/12 for best sound.

Curses! Damn you people and your suggestions. I only try to allow an hour of computer time and I come here...time goes fast. Am in the process of checking out MORE recommended show dates, looking for my "pretty Peggy-O." No doubt there will be no disappointments.

Could not agree more with the change of pace taking away something from the song. Don't want to sound like a music expert, its just my opinion. (Everyone knows opinions are like a--holes, everybody's got one.) Anyway, been enjoying this thread as well as others of course. Thanks for sharing the good tunes.
Regards,
RiverRat

ya know, it's funny, i haven't decided what year Jer's voice finally gave out. I mean, i attended shows, either JGB or GD, from '84 to '92, and while i was at the show, never had a problem. I mean, hey, it's Jerry, warts and all. Also, back in my tape trading days, i'm pretty certain that the bulk of my shows were of the '84 - '88 variety, and you know what? I loved them all. So, when i came across that Peggy-o from the '85 show, i knew it didn't compare to his earlier, more brilliant and interpretive compostions, but it was just something new and i wanted to comment on it. Thanks for sharing, by the way.

Jerrys voice wasnt necessarily bad in those days, during that period he just usually has a really nasal congested sounding voice, which I think was from the heroin. However I like his raspier voice of late 80s on

I'm sure you're already familiar with it but this clip of Jerry performing Peggy-O in Las Vegas in 1994 is a real treat.

He sings it as sweetly as he ever did. It's one of my very favourite songs too - I just love its lilting simplicity.

As another Peggy-O lover, I urge you to check out my all-time favorite, 7/13/76. Jerry's two solos are so lyrical and evocative that it's just like his guitar takes over where his voice leaves off to tell the tale of unrequited love.

The YouTube version from 94, while definitely not a classic, is fun, I admit, for Jerry's shorts, the ever-increasing tempo, and the botched lyrics.

Yo, mr. drinkallday/rockallnight (shoot, wish i had your life!, ha, ha). But seriously, i just checked out your suggestion, and i think you might have something there. The sound wasn't all that great from the stream, but i could sense the value of this particular Peggy-o, and so do very much appreciate the suggestion. Checking out the Crazy Fingers (a long-time personal fave) now.

my favotie peggy-o is still englishtown 77 - two great jams (instead of the usual single jam) and jerry is just on, emotionally and lyrically. he is just on fire on the second jam. absolutely sublime. haven't heard a better one since, and i love that song - sought out many.

so right on you are ... great old tune, done fine by Jer on countless occasions. I think the lyrics that did it for me:

"If ever I return pretty Peggy-O,
if ever I return pretty Peggy-O
If ever I return your cities I will burn
Destroy all the ladies in the area-O."

In other words, either marry me wench, or ...

btw, got your e-mail upon my return from the day's toil. But first had to meet up with the nephew who was clamoring for my attention. I mean, what is it with nine-year-olds? (trust me, i was never like that ...)

[yeah, right :p]

If you guys want something to really relax to, 6/17/75 is the most mellow peggy o Ive ever heard, and it also has two or 3 solos

Wow! Good call casper. And yer right, a damn mellow Peggy-o if ever i've heard one. Actually had the show on my drive, but hadn't given it a listen. Let me add too that the version here on the archive is a pretty decent AUD for the period. So very cool and thanks for the tip.

[think i'm coming up on first solo now ...]

Oh yeah, sweet!

Whew, thought I was different, glad there are other Peggy-O fans out there. Peggy-O is one of my favorite tunes, provides a real nice change of pace. I've got a copy of one, don't know when its from, or where it came from. Only help file name is "Peggy-O (AWESOME!!)" which goes without saying. Been trying to chase it down for years, with no luck. Enjoying the suggestions here, but alas, not a match with my copy of Peggy.

you are not different my friend - PeggyO is one of my alltime favorite tunes the Dead played. very few are bad, some are phenomenal. just a beautiful old traditional "folk" song - or "southern folk" song - however you want to look at it. That song just "sends"me - i go to a different and happy place.

def. agreed on that. In fact, some of the JGB shows even as late as '92 (haven't heard anything beyond that) are sweet to listen to.
